Dan’s introduction to custom framing began with family. His father, a natural artist and craftsman, founded the Grand Haven Frame and Mat Shop location in 1970. Dan would grow up working as an apprentice on the shop floor and in “the back” learning how to join and assemble custom frames. Dan went on to study at Central Michigan University, earned his CPF, and took over the family business in 1994. Today, he maintains his father’s emphasis on “the story” behind each piece, which drives the custom framing process at The Frame and Mat Shop. He also attends frame and art restoration seminars and trade shows across the country. In his spare time, Dan enjoys traveling, gardening, and walking the Grand Haven beach with his wife, Mary.
Stephanie Smith has been a member of the Frame and Mat Shop team for over 28 years. She studied at Grand Valley State University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art. In addition to her wealth of experience in framing 2-D works, Stephanie is considered one of the team’s master seamstresses for her talent and experience working with textiles of all kinds. In her free time, Stephanie enjoys camping, reading, biking and travel. Stephanie also embraces the humor of her maiden name, Jones, in light of her marriage to a Smith. We promise she’s the best Smith around when it comes to custom framing.
